Modeling cortical maps with Topographica

چکیده
The biological function of cortical neurons can often be understood only in the context of large, highly interconnected networks. These networks typically form two-dimensional topographic maps, such as the retinotopic maps in the visual system. Computational simulations of these areas have led to valuable insights about how cortical topography develops and functions, but further progress is difficult because appropriate simulation tools are not available. This paper introduces the freely available Topographica map-level simulator, currently under development at the University of Texas at Austin. Topographica is designed to make large-scale, detailed models practical. The goal is to allow neuroscientists and computational scientists to understand how topographic maps and their connections organize and operate. This understanding will be crucial for integrating experimental observations into a comprehensive theory of

Topographica: Building and Analyzing Map-Level Simulations from Python, C/C++, MATLAB, NEST, or NEURON Components
Many neural regions are arranged into two-dimensional topographic maps, such as the retinotopic maps in mammalian visual cortex. Computational simulations have led to valuable insights about how cortical topography develops and functions, but further progress has been hindered by the lack of appropriate tools. It has been particularly difficult to bridge across levels of detail, because simulat...

متن کاملModel of all known spatial maps in primary visual cortex
The primary visual cortex of mammalians is the most extensively studied area in the visual system. The first studies discovered that there is a retinotopic mapping from the retina to the primary visual cortex. Retinotopic mapping is where neighboring neurons in the cortex respond to neighboring locations on the retina. In further research various other cortical maps such as orientation maps and...
متن کاملModeling Cortical Plasticity Based on Adapting Lateral Interaction
A neural network model called LISSOM for the cooperative self-organization of a erent and lateral connections in cortical maps is applied to modeling cortical plasticity. After self-organization, the LISSOM maps are in a dynamic equilibrium with the input, and reorganize like the cortex in response to simulated cortical lesions and intracortical microstimulation. The model predicts that adaptin...
متن کاملCortical connective field estimates from resting state fMRI activity
One way to study connectivity in visual cortical areas is by examining spontaneous neural activity. In the absence of visual input, such activity remains shaped by the underlying neural architecture and, presumably, may still reflect visuotopic organization. Here, we applied population connective field (CF) modeling to estimate the spatial profile of functional connectivity in the early visual ...
